Imam Rezā (peace be upon him)
Innocent

His Holiness 'Alī ibn Mūsā al-Rezā (peace be upon him), according to a famous narration, was born in 148 AH (December 29, 765 CE), and he was martyred in 203 AH by a coward and treacherous plot. His blessed life was 55 years. His life coincided with the era of tyrannous government of four Abbasid caliphs, i.e. al-Rashid, al-Amin, Ibrahim ibn al-Hadi and Al-Ma’mun. His Holy name was Ali, and his nickname was Abu al-Hasan and his title was Reza, Saber and Vaffa.

His Holiness 'Alī ibn Mūsā al-Rezā (peace be upon him) was born in Medina; then via a political conspiracy, he was invited from Medina to Khorasan seemingly, but in fact and reality, he was drawn to Khorasan by force; because the progeny of holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) were gaining a superabundant popularity among the people.

The era Caliphs were fearful of these loving and popular personalities and tried to care and siege and kill them and deprived people from their guidance and leadership. In this order, the tyrannous caliphs of Bani Abbas, killed Imam al-Sadeq (peace be upon him) and Imam Kazim (peace be upon him); but they did not reach to their desired result.

When Al-Ma’mun Abbasi became a ruler, with a new method and a political conspiracy, he decided to show His Holiness 'Alī ibn Mūsā al-Rezā (peace be upon him) as a person who could be involved in the worldly affairs, presidency and governance and hereby he wanted to distort his spiritual and religious feature and made people pessimistic towards him. Therefore, he brought His Holiness to the Khorasan as a center of Al-Ma’mun government.

Al-Ma’mun, who was disgusted and afraid of the popularity of His Holiness 'Alī ibn Mūsā al-Rezā (peace be upon him) among the people and from his relationship with the people, ordered the carrier caravan of His Holiness 'Alī ibn Mūsā al-Rezā (peace be upon him), not moving from the cities, which was full of Shi`a and supporters of His Holiness – including Qom – and to move from a road which was secure for government.

Finally, he brought His Holiness 'Alī ibn Mūsā al-Rezā (peace be upon him) to the Khorasan and he appointed His Holiness as his successor in a complete political ceremony. His Holiness was completely aware of current political issues and hidden political aspects

Thereupon, his holiness rejected any responsibilities in the government of Al-Ma’mun; but at last they imposed the succession of the throne to his holiness (peace be upon him) by force.

As some historians narrated, when they wanted to impose and appoint His Holiness 'Alī ibn Mūsā al-Rezā (peace be upon him) as his successor; at least for registering in the history and showing them that His Holiness was completely aware of the affairs, his holiness said to Al-Ma’mun: I will die before you, so how to accept your succession to the throne?

His Holiness 'Alī ibn Mūsā al-Rezā (peace be upon him) was under surveillance at that time and Al-Ma’mun tried to portray his holiness as a person consistent with his own tyrannous rule; but he defeated practically and the popularity of his holiness among the people was increasing day by day. Their coward conspiracy and plot to made people pessimistic towards His Holiness 'Alī ibn Mūsā al-Rezā (peace be upon him) was failing. For this reason, they decided to kill His Holiness 'Alī ibn Mūsā al-Rezā Reza (peace be upon him).

They killed Imam Reza (peace be upon him) at the 55 years old by an infelicitous trick and trap. Peace be upon him and his Fathers and Offspring.
